In the sugar mills of 19th-century Queensland, the millwright was the person who built and maintained the machinery that kept everything running. Not the owner, not the labourer: the craftsperson in the middle, responsible for the thing actually working. We took the name because that’s the job: the software a business runs on, built to hold up under real use, and kept running for years.

Who we are

Cam Howarth, founder

Our own products

We build one product at a time, and each one properly. Our first is Kaolin: online booking for day spas, massage therapists, wellness centres and beauty salons. It is in development.

Each trade gets a product of its own, with its own name and the words the trade uses, all on one booking platform. Products for barbers, tattoo artists and gyms will follow.

Work for clients

We build for other businesses to the same standard as our own: web and mobile apps, platforms and websites, and the support that keeps them running. See how a project runs, or start one.

Three rules we build by

Load-bearing first

Before anything ships, we ask what stops working if it breaks on a Tuesday morning. If the honest answer is “nothing much”, it doesn’t ship.

Why “load-bearing”

Made for real conditions

Software gets used on old phones, weak signal and the busiest day of the year. We build and test for those days, not the demo. This site holds itself to published budgets.

How this site is made

Built to be kept

Our products or yours, we write software the next person can pick up: tested, documented and plain. We answer for what we ship.

What we won’t do

  • Ship a feature we can’t look after for as long as people rely on it.
  • Follow you around this site. It has no cookies, analytics scripts or ads.
